Government of Alberta Re-Opens Massage Therapy
December 22, 2020
Massage therapists received an exemption on December 22nd, and were allowed to return to work. This is exciting news for more reasons, than the obvious. This came about from the unification of the four associations in Alberta, their members and the general public reaching out to the Government and expressing their beliefs that massage therapists should be treated the same as other regulated professions.
With this unification, there is hope that we will in turn become regulated, which will validate our profession on another level.
With this re-opening, massage therapists are required to follow the same PPE regulations that were in place before the shut down. Over the coming weeks, the four associations will be coming together and presenting uniform requirements for all massage therapists across Alberta, since the requirements upon opening in June depended on the association that the therapist belonged to.
As for clients, this re-opening will still require masks to be worn when attending your massage appointment. As we are not regulated, the government has required a Doctor's note or a referral from a regulated health professional in order for you to receive a massage. This will need to be kept as part of your file with my records, so please make sure you have this in place before you book your massage. The note/referral can be within the past 12 months, but can not be later.
At this time, Manual Osteopathic Therapy is still closed until further notice.
